In the 1960s, recognizing a need in the growing Coachella Valley, Bob and Dolores Hope made a significant philanthropic contribution. They donated 80 acres from their Anderson Rancho holding, forming the foundation for a much-needed medical center. This act of generosity, initiated by a conversation between Dolores Hope and resident Florence Swanson, was pivotal in establishing the facility.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, lent their name to the medical center, further solidifying its prestige. Dolores Hope spearheaded ambitious fundraising campaigns, enlisting support from Hollywood icons like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, and securing substantial investments. Bob Hope also contributed significantly through benefit concerts and the annual Bob Hope Classic golf tournament.
Edward Durell Stone designed the primary medical building. In 1971, the facility officially opened with 281 beds. The Eisenhower Medical Center has since expanded its services and facilities, continuing to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the region. Dolores Hope remained actively involved until her passing in 2011.
