The documentary film "Boatbuilders," directed by Luke Lorentzen, will have its world premiere in the Open Section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 7. The film offers an intimate look at the skilled artisans at Brooklin Boat Yard in Maine.
Over the course of four seasons, Lorentzen chronicles the detailed process of constructing a 56-foot wooden sailboat. The documentary highlights the craftsmanship, collaboration, and community spirit inherent in this traditional maritime practice.
MetFilm Sales has secured worldwide distribution rights for "Boatbuilders." The company plans to screen the film for buyers at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival Market in mid-September. The documentary's North American premiere is scheduled for September 17 as the opening night film of the Camden International Film Festival.
This film represents Lorentzen's third feature documentary, following his previous critically acclaimed works, "Midnight Family" and "A Still Small Voice." Both of his prior films received Oscar shortlisting, with "A Still Small Voice" also earning the 2023 U.S. Documentary Best Director Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
