Beyond Horror: Blumhouse Backs Peasants' Revolt Drama

Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions, a powerhouse in 21st-century horror with hits like Get Out and Paranormal Activity, is backing a period drama titled 'The Uprising.' This film delves into England's 1381 Peasants' Revolt and has connections to the legend of Robin Hood, marking a departure from the company's typical genre focus.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, who previously collaborated with Blum on the thriller 'The Lost Bus,' 'The Uprising' was never conceived as a horror movie. Greengrass envisioned it as a historical epic and action drama. The film centers on Andrew Garfield as a ploughman named Ploughman, who, after losing his family to the Black Death, incites a revolt against the monarchy due to unjust taxation.

The ensemble cast also includes Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Thomasin McKenzie, and Katherine Waterston. This project underscores Blumhouse's expanding portfolio, which includes non-horror films such as 'Tooth Fairy,' 'Whiplash,' and 'BlacKkKlansman,' and the upcoming musical adaptation 'Merrily We Roll Along.'

'The Uprising' is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 10, 2026. This release follows a highly successful year for Blumhouse in the horror genre, with 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms' achieving significant success earlier in 2026.
