A new film adaptation, "The Blue Breaks," brings Machiya Ryohei's 2016 novel to life. Directed by Uchiyama Takuya, the story follows Shukichi, a detached part-time worker in his thirties. His life takes a turn as he grapples with his identity as a sperm donor conceived individual and his place in the world.
The narrative delves into Shukichi's confusion over his sexuality and identity after encounters with a solitary boxer and a terminally ill young woman named Toko. Her lighthearted approach to her limited time impacts him deeply. Ultimately, Shukichi and those close to him travel to Korea to confront their lives and deaths.
Filmmaker Uchiyama Takuya, now the age Machiya was when he wrote the novel, found resonance in Shukichi's struggle with societal expectations of masculinity. The film, a Japan-Italy co-production, aims to explore diversity and unapologetic romance. Producers are currently working on financing and casting, with filming planned for 2027 and completion in 2028, targeting an international festival premiere.
