A remarkable artist named Rampal, who is visually impaired, has gained acclaim for his ability to create intricate sculptures solely through touch. This 50-year-old man, residing in Basti, Uttar Pradesh, has produced over 700 sculptures, demonstrating extraordinary skill.
Rampal's journey with art began at the tender age of four in Kolkata, under the tutelage of his father, who was determined to equip his visually impaired sons with a livelihood. It took Rampal nearly a decade to master the craft of idol-making.
His hands have become his eyes, enabling him to meticulously shape clay, understand form, and ensure symmetry without sight. He has transitioned from Kolkata to Basti in search of better opportunities, now earning approximately INR 1 lakh to INR 1.5 lakh annually from his work.
Further adding to his unique approach, Rampal uses soil sourced from fields and colors derived from plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. His commitment to environmental sustainability means his idols naturally dissolve in water after immersion, minimizing waste.
