Curators are diligently working to uncover the history within a vast archive spanning over 100 years of ballroom dancing in the Lancashire seaside resort of Blackpool. The Blackpool Dance Festival, initiated in 1920, is preparing for its centenary edition, scheduled to commence this Saturday. Professionals from around the globe will gather at the renowned Empress Ballroom for this historic event. Showtown Museum's heritage officer, Tom Carter, shared insights into the archive's contents, which include photographs, newspaper clippings, and programs dating back to the festival's inception. He highlighted a 1961 Opera House program featuring ballroom champions alongside iconic performers like Shirley Bassey and Cliff Richard. The archive also contains an early trophy awarded for innovative dances, such as the 'crush trot,' designed for crowded dance floors. Festival organizer Natalie Hayes noted a significant increase in entries for the 100th edition, with over 9,000 participants expected over 13 days. Hayes expressed excitement about the international event's impact on the small seaside town. Looking back, Carter observed that while some aspects of life have changed, others remain remarkably similar, drawing parallels between historical accounts of public nuisances and contemporary issues.
