The 2025 box office has hit a new low this past weekend, with overall grosses sinking to just $54 million. In a tight race for the top spot, Universal/Blumhouse's "Black Phone 2" and Paramount/Constantin's "Regretting You" each earned $8 million.
The Halloween holiday, which fell on a Friday this year, and the World Series going to a decisive Game 7 on Saturday, kept many potential moviegoers away from theaters. Studios wisely decided to avoid releasing any major new films this weekend, a decision that proved even smarter given the stiff competition.
Despite the slow weekend, "Regretting You" managed a strong Saturday rebound among its core female audience, edging out "Black Phone 2" for the #1 position with a $8.1 million second-weekend haul. The Colleen Hoover adaptation has now earned $27.5 million in 10 days.
Meanwhile, "Black Phone 2" is close behind with $8 million, bringing its domestic total to $61.4 million, just shy of the $62.4 million earned by its 2022 predecessor. In third place is last weekend's top film, Sony/Crunchyroll's "Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc," which saw a steep 67% drop to $6 million in its second outing. However, the anime sequel is still on track to surpass "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" as Crunchyroll's second highest-grossing film domestically.
With the holiday season and major releases on the horizon, the 2025 box office will be looking to rebound from this slow period in the coming weeks.
