Brazil's Nicho54 Institute has launched Cinemateca Negra, a significant publication documenting Black Brazilian cinema. This initiative, unveiled at the Marché du Film in Cannes, maps over a thousand films created by Black filmmakers between 1949 and 2022. It incorporates extensive criticism, interviews, and data to counteract the historical marginalization of Black artists in the country.
Fernanda Lomba, founder of Nicho54, highlighted the research's demonstration of Black creativity's strength over seven decades, despite ongoing inequalities. The collective seeks partnerships for film preservation and to stimulate healthier industry practices for future Black filmmakers. Nicho54 is also promoting its digital platform, Sala 54, which features arthouse films by Black Brazilian directors, through an inaugural collaboration with the Pavillion Afronova at Cannes.
This partnership with the Pavillion Afronova signifies a strategic effort to strengthen cultural and economic ties between Black Brazil, Africa, and diasporic Europe. Nicho54 views this as a vital step in its internationalization goals, fostering cooperation beyond shared identities. The Sala54 initiative aims to competitively position Black Brazilian cinema internationally by endorsing the global circulation of Black narratives and celebrating the diversity of Black perspectives within the Brazilian audiovisual industry.
