Screenwriter Billy Ray, renowned for adapting Suzanne Collins' 'The Hunger Games' series, has ventured into original YA fiction with his debut novel, 'Burn The Water.' Ray, who also adapted the upcoming 'Sunrise on the Reaping,' conceived the idea for 'Burn The Water' years prior, shelving it until the 2023 WGA Strikes provided the necessary time to develop it.
The novel is set in London in the year 2425, three centuries after rising oceans submerged much of England. This catastrophic event led to an ongoing conflict between two factions: the Crowns and the Rogues. The narrative centers on Rafe and Jule, young captains from opposing armies, who fall in love despite being conditioned to hate each other.
Ray sought feedback on an early draft from Suzanne Collins, maintaining a connection with the author he previously collaborated with on 'Sunrise on the Reaping.' His daughter's age during the initial 'Hunger Games' adaptation also influenced his immersion in the YA genre. Ray considers 'The Hunger Games' a monumental idea, but 'Burn The Water' offers a distinct narrative.
While 'Burn The Water' shares thematic DNA with 'The Hunger Games,' its Shakespearean-inspired plot explores societal division and the vital role of art. Ray has envisioned 'Burn The Water' as a trilogy, promising more stories within this unique dystopian world.
