Summary

- He was placed in a coma for three days due to a severe infection.
- Porter is now focused on hope and creation after his recovery.

Billy Porter, 56, recently recounted a severe health crisis where he fell into a three-day coma last fall due to sepsis. This life-threatening condition stemmed from a urinary infection that was not properly treated, leading to kidney complications and spreading into his bloodstream. The actor required an ECMO machine to support his heart and lung functions, and also experienced compartment syndrome in his leg.
Porter, who was scheduled to star in a Broadway revival of "Cabaret," had to withdraw from the production due to his hospitalization. He described his recovery as a "gift to be alive" and a profound, mind-altering experience. The survival has inspired him to pursue more creative endeavors through his production company, focusing on themes of love and hope.
Fresh off his recovery, Porter celebrated the release of his new children's book, "Songbird in the Light," on March 17, 2026. He expressed a renewed sense of purpose, stating, "My work here on this Earth is not done." Porter is actively seeking to "rule the world" by creating his own material, driven by a philosophy of choosing love, hope, peace, and joy.
