Scranton is preparing to welcome a historic "Big Boy Reunion" at the Steamtown National Historic Site. The event will feature a rare two-week public display of Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, alongside Steamtown's own Big Boy 4012. This reunion is anticipated to be the largest gathering at Steamtown since its opening in 1995.
The Big Boy 4014 is currently on a coast-to-coast tour celebrating America's 250th anniversary. Its visit to Scranton from June 15 to June 30 offers a unique opportunity for tens of thousands of rail enthusiasts to see two of the remaining eight Big Boy locomotives side-by-side. This spectacle is expected to significantly boost tourism in Scranton, highlighting its rich railroad history.
City officials are proactively managing the expected surge in visitors, coordinating with the Department of Transportation and local construction crews to mitigate traffic and parking issues. Paid and free parking options, along with shuttle services, are being provided. Timed reservations are required for entry to Steamtown, with a small service fee.
This locomotive reunion kicks off a summer of major events for Scranton, which will also host FIFA World Cup "Fan Zone" watch parties. Mayor Paige G. Cognetti expressed excitement in showcasing Scranton as a world-class city prepared for these significant celebrations.
