Plymouth is currently celebrating the vibrant artwork of local artist Beryl Cook with an extensive exhibition titled "Pride and Joy." Opening on January 24th and running for four months at The Box, the show features over 80 of Cook's colorful depictions of people enjoying everyday life. Over 3,000 tickets have already been purchased, underscoring the public's enthusiasm for her work.
Adding a unique dimension to the celebration, four life-size 3D sculptures based on Cook's iconic paintings are now displayed throughout Plymouth. These installations bring her beloved characters to the very streets she often painted, including areas like the Hoe and the Barbican. The exhibition is set to reassess Cook's importance as an artist who captured ordinary life during a significant period of British history.
Beryl Cook, who passed away in 2008, is remembered for her warm, humorous, and affectionate portrayal of Plymouth and its people. Complementing the exhibition and sculptures, a comedy walking tour is being offered, guiding visitors through the artist's favorite local spots. This centenary year tribute ensures Cook's legacy continues to bring joy to the city she so dearly loved.
