Bernie Taupin: Beyond Elton John's Shadow

Bernie Taupin, best known for his decades-long lyrical partnership with Elton John, is set to release his first solo album in nearly 40 years. Titled "The Sea Has No Mercy," the album is slated for release on October 23 and is unique in that it is entirely self-written by Taupin. This marks a significant personal artistic endeavor for the acclaimed lyricist, who has co-written over 400 songs with John.

The new project features 10 songs where Taupin distills his lived experiences and reflections. He describes feeling more equipped with wisdom at 76 to convey his life's recalls. The album also delves into profound personal fears, notably Taupin's lifelong terror of the open sea, a phobia linked to two near-drowning incidents in his past.

Taupin recently discussed his new work on the "Sad Song Queens" podcast, where he offered listeners a first look at the album. He expressed that he doesn't consider himself a poet, distinguishing lyricism as a separate art form. During the podcast, he also shared his admiration for contemporary artist Olivia Rodrigo and revealed details about the creation of iconic songs like "The Bitch Is Back."
