The North American premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, an Olivier Award-winning musical, is now captivating audiences in New York City. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic short story, the musical transports the narrative from its famous film adaptation to a quaint fishing village on the coast of Cornwall, England. This setting allows Benjamin Button, a man born elderly and aging backward, to navigate his extraordinary life within a close-knit community.
The production distinguishes itself through its innovative theatrical approach. Instead of relying on extensive visual effects, the musical features a cast of 15 actor-musicians who perform Darren Clark's score live while embodying the story's diverse characters. This vibrant company, led by stars Andrew Durand as Benjamin and Kelsee Kimmel as Elowen Keene, brings to life a poignant love story that delves into the nature of time and existence.
Originally premiering in London in 2019, the musical received critical acclaim, culminating in a West End run and three Olivier Awards in 2025, including Best New Musical. The show's journey to New York has been years in the making, with its limited engagement scheduled to run through December 6. The production offers a deeply personal and meaningful exploration of universal themes, resonating with audiences through its fantastical premise and heartfelt storytelling.
