A four-part docuseries, "The Many Lives of Benjaman Kyle," is set to explore the perplexing case of a man who claimed a rare form of amnesia for over a decade. Discovered injured and without identification in August 2004, the man, who later adopted the name Benjaman Kyle, became the subject of an intensive investigation by filmmakers Eric and Shannon Evangelista.
As producers attempted to help Kyle, identified in 2015 as William Burgess Powell, they encountered increasing difficulties and disturbing inconsistencies in his narrative. Powell had reportedly disappeared from Lafayette, Indiana, in 1976, leaving his family to believe he was deceased.
The investigation has reportedly uncovered potential connections to three cold cases and a powerful local crime family, adding layers of suspicion to Powell's story. Filmmakers noted Kyle's controlling nature regarding information and his increasingly unsettling behavior, including morbid jokes about disposing of bodies in remote locations.
Retired FBI agent Ken Maxwell expressed serious concerns about Powell's remarks, deeming them highly unusual and alarming. The situation intensified when Powell reportedly attempted to gain access to a producer's hotel room, further raising safety concerns among the documentary crew. The series premieres May 25 on Investigation Discovery.
