Thailand Mourns the Loss of Queen Mother Sirikit, Trailblazer for the Rural Poor

On October 25, 2025, Thailand mourns the loss of its beloved Queen Mother Sirikit, who passed away at the age of 93. Sirikit, who had been largely absent from public life in recent years due to declining health, died in a Bangkok hospital after suffering from a blood infection since mid-October.

Sirikit was a revered figure in Thailand, known for her tireless efforts to help the rural poor, preserve traditional crafts, and protect the environment. She supervised numerous royal development projects across the country, including the SUPPORT foundation, which trained thousands of villagers in traditional skills like silk-weaving and jewelry-making. Sirikit was also dubbed the "Green Queen" for her initiatives to save endangered forests and wildlife.

However, Sirikit's role was not without controversy. As the monarchy's influence was increasingly scrutinized during Thailand's political turbulence, Sirikit's behind-the-scenes involvement during military coups and street protests also came under scrutiny. Her public attendance at the funeral of a protester killed in clashes with police was seen by many as her taking a side in the country's political schism.

Her portrait was displayed in homes and public spaces across the country, and her August 12th birthday was celebrated as Mother's Day.
