In the latest installment of the "Now You See Me" franchise, "Now You See Me: Now You Don't," the film delivers a surprising and emotional twist - the death of the beloved character Thaddeus, played by acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman. The scene, in which Thaddeus is shot by French police working for the villain Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike), is described as shockingly realistic, leaving actress Isla Fisher, who plays escapologist Henley Reeves, in tears during filming.
"That was a really hard scene to film. I'm just an emotional person anyway, and watching Morgan Freeman, who's such an incredible actor, die in such a realistic way, even though we shot it for three days, I just couldn't stop crying," Fisher revealed. Despite the heartbreak, director Ruben Fleischer confirms that Thaddeus' death is permanent, though the filmmakers did consider reviving him as a twist. Ultimately, they decided to keep the death as a powerful plot point, allowing the villain Veronika to be truly villainous.
The film also introduces new characters, including Justice Smith's Charlie, who is revealed to be Veronika's presumed-dead half-brother, using the Horsemen to expose her crimes. With this third-act twist, Fleischer aimed to deliver a "big reveal" that would "astound audiences," just like the classic films "The Usual Suspects" and "The Sixth Sense."
