Surrealist Artists Star in Belgian Crime Drama

A Belgian crime drama, "This is Not a Murder Mystery," transports viewers to the 1930s, centering on young Surrealist artists including Dali and Magritte. The series, conceived by Belgians, has achieved remarkable success, becoming Flanders' most significant production to date. Its ambitious scope is underscored by co-production from ten European broadcasters and support from various funding bodies.

The six-part series, each 54 minutes long, was filmed across Belgium and Ireland. Panenka, the production company, received early backing from Belgian public broadcaster VRT, which recognized its potential. The project's international debut at the EFM co-production market garnered significant interest, leading to collaborations with Studiocanal and a broad alliance of broadcasters known as New8.

Beyond the main drama, a companion series of six short episodes titled "This is Not a Fiction" offers deeper insights. These shorts connect the fictional narrative with reality by exploring the archives and featuring cast conversations about the real artists and the show's production. This multi-faceted approach has secured additional funding and broadened the project's appeal. The series premiered on VRT and is available on its online platform, VRT MAX, receiving positive audience reception and media attention. A partnership with the Antwerp Fine Arts Museum for a René Magritte exhibition further enhanced its cultural relevance. The show's French premiere is scheduled for April 26, with its premiere on U&Drama set for April 29, where all episodes will be available as a box set. The series has already been sold in nearly 20 territories.
