Belgian Cinema's Rise: Cannes to Oscars & Beyond

Belgian cinema, particularly from the Flanders region, is achieving notable international success. Films like Lukas Dhont's "Coward" and Michaël R. Roskam's "Le Faux Soir" have garnered attention at prestigious festivals including Cannes and the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

These acclaimed productions were supported by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) and Screen Flanders. Roskam highlighted the VAF's vital role, stating it provides not only financing but also creative freedom, crucial for making auteur-driven cinema in a smaller market like Belgium. He emphasized the fund's rigorous selection process ensures high standards for made films.

Collaboration between Belgium's regions is also proving successful, with both "Coward" and "Le Faux Soir" co-productions benefiting from support from both Flanders and the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. This inter-regional partnership strengthens the Belgian film industry by broadening access to talent and expertise.

The VAF's approach, described as hands-on and trust-based, is proving effective. This support system has also benefited emerging talent, such as animator Filip Anthonissen, whose short film "Melk" won a major award at Locarno and is headed to TIFF. Anthonissen noted the VAF's programs make entering the film industry more accessible for newcomers.

Looking ahead, there is a focus on incentivizing local audiences to support national films, with festival selections serving as a key quality indicator. Filmmakers are exploring inventive ways to bring domestic audiences back to cinemas, recognizing cinema's importance as a shared cultural experience. Flanders aims to champion its cinema, fostering talent and ambition both at home and internationally.
