Singer's Scam Past and Trauma Survival

Born in Bromsgrove in 1994, singer and songwriter Becky Hill began her musical journey early, eventually reaching the semifinals of The Voice UK. Her career has since been marked by two top 10 albums, numerous collaborations, and consecutive Brit awards for best dance act in 2022 and 2023.

Early in her life, Hill experienced a distressing scam with a children's modeling agency, which cost her family money without any return. She also navigated a dysfunctional home environment with parents on second marriages and multiple siblings, though she consistently felt loved.

Her teenage years involved smoking weed and experiencing anger, with drum'n'bass music providing an escape. At 17, while working two bar jobs and feeling depressed, she joined The Voice UK, seeing it as a way to leave her hometown and gain industry contacts.

Hill describes her 20s as a decade of significant personal turbulence. In one difficult year, she was dropped by her label and sexually assaulted by a friend. She also navigated relationship ups and downs and felt her successes were often attributed to producers rather than herself.

Despite these challenges, Hill has achieved financial stability, enabling her to purchase homes for her parents and brother. She has been in therapy since age 22, actively working on her impostor syndrome, a persistent struggle in the unpredictable music industry.

Now in her 30s, Hill is focused on creating music that reflects her authentic voice and experiences, prioritizing personal pride over commercial success. She expresses a newfound kindness towards herself, a quality she felt she lost in her 20s.
