Dennis Wilson, a member of The Beach Boys, released his first and only solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue, in August 1977. Nearly five decades later, the album's song "Rainbows" is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. This track has been featured in two recent productions: the science fiction film Project Hail Mary and the HBO series DTF St. Louis.
In Project Hail Mary, "Rainbows" accompanies a scene where the protagonist describes Earth's beauty. The song also plays during a flashback in DTF St. Louis, set in Chicago, where a character explains a medical condition. "Rainbows," with lyrics co-written by Dennis and his brother Carl Wilson, alongside Stephen Kalinich, is noted for its blissful melody and nature-themed lyrics.
Wilson's solo endeavors followed a period of personal struggles. He passed away in 1983 at the age of 39. His second intended solo album, Bambu, remained unfinished at the time of his death, with some completed tracks released in 2017. Brian Wilson, Dennis's brother, reflected on Pacific Ocean Blue, acknowledging the album's reflection of Dennis's sad yet beautiful life.
