BBFC Embraces AI for First Time in Record Film Rating Year

In 2025, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) marked a year of significant technological adoption and record-breaking achievements. For the first time, AI was utilized to support the classification of streaming content, assisting compliance officers in their assessments. This innovation coincided with a historic year for cinema, as the BBFC classified an unprecedented 1,315 feature films. The organization also noted a substantial increase in packaged media submissions, with anime titles comprising 40% of the total.

Continuing its adaptation to digital culture, the BBFC forged a new self-rating partnership with Prime Video, building on its existing collaboration with Netflix. These initiatives underscore the BBFC's commitment to embracing technology for efficient content classification. The organization also reinforced its dedication to protecting children and young people by ensuring adult content filters align with their 18 standard rating, working closely with UK mobile network operators.

The BBFC's role in regulating potentially harmful content extends to online pornography. Following a report highlighting concerns about violent content, a survey revealed that 35% of adult pornography users were exposed to violent or abusive material in the preceding three months. Baroness Bertin emphasized the crucial need for regulatory parity between offline and online content, advocating for a framework similar to the 1984 legislation that mandated classification for physical videos.
