Batwoman Alum Slams Sweeney's Controversial Biopic for "Ruining" Christy Martin's Story

In a recent social media post, former Batwoman actress Ruby Rose has strongly criticized the new Christy Martin biopic and its star, Sydney Sweeney. According to Rose, she was originally attached to play the real-life boxer in the film, but the role ultimately went to Sweeney.

Rose expressed her disappointment with the movie's $1.3 million opening, as well as Sweeney's recent controversial American Eagle ad, which was accused of promoting eugenics. "The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry," Rose wrote, referring to Martin's nickname. "Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting."

The actress went on to criticize Sweeney's "PR" for talking about the film's poor performance and claiming it was done for "the people." Rose argued that "none of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us." She called Sweeney a "cretin" and said the actress "ruined the film."

In a later post, Rose acknowledged that the term "cretin" is ableist and said she should have simply called Sweeney a "psychopath" instead. Sweeney's team has not yet responded to Rose's comments.

Despite the controversy, Sweeney expressed pride in the Christy Martin project, stating that if it gave "even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded." She thanked the film's supporters and said it has been the "most impactful project" of her life.
