Gretchen Wyder Zunic, a recently retired orchestra teacher and self-proclaimed "Fanilow," will experience a dream come true as she joins Barry Manilow on stage during his concert at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on August 2, 2026. Zunic is the Columbus recipient of the Manilow Music Teacher Award, an accolade celebrating exceptional music educators in cities across Manilow's tour schedule.
The $10,000 award is comprised of a $5,000 cash prize and $5,000 in "Manilow Bucks" designated for purchasing instruments for her former school district. Zunic, who dedicated 31 of her 35 years in education to Upper Arlington Schools, plans to use the funds to acquire much-needed smaller cellos and basses for middle schoolers, and to replace aging instruments for the high school orchestra.
This award is part of the Manilow Music Project, established in 2008 to bolster underfunded music programs, donate instruments, and offer music scholarships. The project has awarded over $10 million nationally. Manilow's commitment to music education is highlighted by the project's president, who noted the crucial role of such initiatives amidst funding cuts, emphasizing the cognitive benefits of music learning for students.
Zunic expressed immense gratitude and excitement, describing the award as a perfect conclusion to her teaching career. She looks forward to meeting Manilow privately and thanking him onstage for his significant contributions to music education and his support for teachers nationwide.
