Barbara Cartland: Forgotten Queen of Romance?

Barbara Cartland, who sold an astonishing 750 million books, is now a forgotten figure in popular culture, despite being the third best-selling author in history. She meticulously managed her public image, a precursor to modern social media branding.

A new biography, published on 2026-09-10, seeks to revive her memory beyond her distinctive pink attire. The book examines her remarkable career and equally extraordinary life, aiming to recognize her achievements which have been overshadowed by her persona.

Born in 1901, Cartland's life spanned significant 20th-century changes, including two World Wars and social revolutions. Her early career included groundbreaking, racy novels in the 1920s and 1930s, before her imperial phase in the 1960s-1980s, producing romantic fiction at a prolific pace.

Cartland's novels provided an escape for working-class women, offering glamour and attentive men. She was also the step-grandmother of Princess Diana. Despite her conservative views clashing with feminism, her books offered a counterpoint to the era's social shifts.

Beyond her literary output, Cartland was a social climber and a Conservative county councillor who championed the underprivileged. She also became a fierce advocate for the Romany Gypsy community, leading to Britain's first permanent Gypsy site, nicknamed Barbaraville.

Co-founder of the Romantic Novelists Association in 1960, Cartland's legacy is that of a blockbuster author. While her specific readership may have changed, her impact on the romance genre and her unique branding remain significant.
