In a significant achievement, Bangladesh has selected Leesa Gazi's debut film 'Barir Naam Shahana' ('A House Named Shahana') as its submission for the Best International Feature category at the 98th Academy Awards. The drama, set in rural Bangladesh in the 1990s, follows the story of Dipa, a young woman who is forced into an abusive marriage with a widower in England.
After enduring this traumatic experience, Dipa returns to her hometown as a divorcee and confronts the deeply entrenched patriarchal attitudes of her community. Undeterred, she sets out to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, charting a gradual journey from vulnerability to self-determination.
The film, produced by Komola Collective and Goopy Bagha Productions Limited, features a standout performance by Aanon Siddiqua as Dipa, supported by a talented ensemble cast that includes veteran Bangladeshi actors. 'Barir Naam Shahana' had its world premiere at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Film Critics Guild Gender Sensitivity Award, and has since traveled to other prestigious festivals.
Bangladesh's selection of this powerful and socially relevant film underscores the country's growing presence on the global cinematic stage. As the Oscar international feature shortlist is announced in mid-December, all eyes will be on 'Barir Naam Shahana' and its potential to secure a coveted nomination.
