- Inspired by a real-life online interaction before a tragedy.
- Debut film aims for authentic portrayal of online youth culture.

Oscar Boyson's directorial debut, "Our Hero, Balthazar," presents a stark social satire centered on a young man named Balthazar. This character crafts performative online videos lamenting gun violence before embarking on a journey to Texas. His mission is to intervene with an individual he believes might be a school shooter. The film's challenging premise was inspired by a real-life event in 2022 where a shooter texted an online friend in Germany shortly before their spree.
Boyson and co-writer Ricky Camilleri sought to capture the burden of global tragedies placed upon youth through social media. They intentionally crafted Balthazar as a non-heroic character whose online actions complicate his motivations. The film's authentic handling of online youth culture draws inspiration from films like "Bully" and "River's Edge."
After its 2025 Tribeca Festival premiere, "Balthazar" began a measured rollout on March 26, with a nationwide expansion scheduled for Friday. Despite initial funding challenges, the film has gained traction, potentially mirroring the success of A24's "The Drama." The film's social media presence, featuring lead actor Jaeden Martell in character, has garnered over 85,000 followers, positioning it as a significant independent film marketing effort.
Boyson, who previously worked with filmmakers like the Safdie brothers and produced "Frances Ha," emphasizes the importance of authentic storytelling. He believes Hollywood underrepresents young people's perspectives and their understanding of digital realities. The director hopes "Balthazar" resonates with this generation by reflecting their experiences and acknowledging their agency in navigating a complex world.
