Summary
- Contestant Iain Ross pays tribute to Iain Watters' 2014 "Bingate" incident
- Ross creates a meringue dessert served in a bin, mirroring Watters' baked Alaska
- Judges Hollywood and Prue Leith react with amusement to the "Bingate Redemption"

On October 17, 2025, Netflix's The Great British Baking Show featured a clever nod to one of the series' most dramatic moments from over a decade ago. During the latest episode, contestant Iain Ross, a 29-year-old software engineer, took inspiration from series 5 competitor Iain Watters and his infamous "Bingate" incident.
In 2014, Watters was involved in a baking show controversy when his baked Alaska melted after another contestant accidentally removed it from the freezer. Outraged, Watters threw the dessert in the trash and presented the judges with the bin, leading to his elimination.
Now, over 11 years later, Ross decided to revisit this iconic moment. For the meringue show-stopper challenge, he presented a "Bingate Redemption" vacherin glacé, featuring espresso sorbet, dark chocolate ice cream, sesame praline, and vanilla chantilly cream, all served inside a meringue shaped like a trash can.
Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were amused by Ross' clever homage, with Hollywood joking that this was the "second time a bin's been put towards us." While the judges had mixed opinions on the flavor combinations, they appreciated the creative nod to the past.
"I love the design but I don't like the coffee and I don't like the chocolate," Hollywood said. "I would question the flavor combination." However, he concluded by telling Ross, "I'm happy that you've put 'Bingate' to bed."
