The celebrated and iconoclastic jazz group The Bad Plus has announced it will disband in 2026, concluding a 26-year journey of musical experimentation. Founding members Reid Anderson and Dave King shared the news, emphasizing their pride in the band's legacy of 16 studio albums and its impact.
Formed in Minneapolis in 2000, The Bad Plus quickly distinguished itself by blending avant-garde jazz with rock energy, reaching audiences beyond traditional jazz circles with audacious covers and original compositions. The group evolved through various lineups, including a transition to a piano-less quartet in 2021.
As they conclude their run, The Bad Plus will embark on two distinct farewell touring projects. The current quartet will perform North American dates, including a residency at Jazz St. Louis and a set at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Anderson and King will also join other musicians for a tribute project launching in March 2026.
