12 Mar
Summary
- Stunt double Cheryl Wheeler suffered severe injuries during filming.
- Wheeler required four surgeries and a two-year recovery period.
- Michael J. Fox mistook the stunt double's injury for Vogel's.

Darlene Vogel, known for her role as Spike in Back to the Future II, has clarified a significant on-set incident involving her stunt double. Many fans mistakenly believe Vogel was the one seriously injured during the iconic hoverboard chase scene that ends with a crash into the Hill Valley clocktower.
In reality, Vogel's stunt double, Cheryl Wheeler, suffered a severe accident. Wheeler broke several facial bones and her right arm, also sustaining a concussion. Her subsequent recovery spanned two years and required four reconstructive surgeries.
Wheeler recounted that the stunt involved four doubles on a single tether. A malfunction caused them to drift left, resulting in Wheeler colliding with a column and falling 20 feet onto concrete. This take was ultimately used in the film.
Even actor Michael J. Fox was unaware of the details, recently asking Vogel if she was the one who got hurt. Vogel corrected him, identifying Wheeler as the stunt double who endured the serious injury during the filming of the 1989 sequel.
