Architect Libby Watts has been recognized with an award for her significant contributions to the restoration of St Mary the Virgin in Turville. This historic Grade II listed church, dating back to the 12th Century, is widely known for its exterior appearing as St Barnabus in the popular BBC sitcom 'The Vicar of Dibley'.
The project, initiated after a structural inspection revealed the need for extensive repairs, focused on preserving the ancient fabric while modernizing facilities. Key work included the intricate renovation of the north porch, where cement render was carefully removed to reveal and repair historic timber frame and brick infill panels.
Beyond the north porch, the transformation encompassed repairs to the church's glass, plaster, and roof. Modern enhancements were also implemented, such as the addition of a disabled toilet and upgrades to the lighting, electrics, and heating systems to meet contemporary standards.
Watts, director of Liberty Rose Architects, described the project as particularly rewarding due to the church's recognizable status. She highlighted the positive impact of the renovations, noting that the work has made a significant difference and contributes to a lasting legacy. The recognition at the Church Architecture Awards was celebrated as a team effort, acknowledging the collaborative work with craftspeople.
