James Cameron's latest cinematic offering, Avatar 3, has achieved unprecedented success in IMAX screenings worldwide. The film recorded the biggest international debut in IMAX history, surpassing the global openings of highly anticipated films such as Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Superman. This accomplishment highlights the audience's strong preference for experiencing Cameron's visually stunning creations on the largest screens available.
Further cementing its place in IMAX history, Avatar 3 now stands as the fourth biggest global debut for the format. It trails only behind monumental releases like Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Notably, James Cameron is the sole Hollywood filmmaker to have multiple post-COVID films cross the $40 million mark in IMAX opening weekends.
Released on December 19, Avatar 3 has already garnered significant box office success, earning $89.16 million domestically and $258.17 million internationally, totaling $347.3 million worldwide on its opening weekend. It has quickly become the 17th highest-grossing film of the year and is expected to occupy IMAX screens until mid-January.
