Author's Novel Shines in New Film '500 Miles'

Mark Lowery, an award-winning author, has seen his 2018 novel, 'Charlie and Me,' transformed into the film '500 Miles.' The movie features prominent actors Bill Nighy and Maisie Williams. The film is scheduled for release in the UK on June 26, 2026. Lowery noted that while several of his previous books came close to adaptation, this is the first to reach completion.

Filming for '500 Miles' commenced in 2024 under the direction of BAFTA-winning Morgan Matthews. Lowery shared a strong rapport with Matthews and the film team, emphasizing their success in preserving the crucial spirit of his book. The author stated his only request was to maintain the unique feeling of the novel, which he believes the film has achieved.

The lead roles of Charlie and Finn are portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell and Roman Griffin Davis, respectively. Lowery expressed delight, stating they perfectly matched his original vision for the characters. He also praised the performances of Michael Socha and Claire Dunne, who play the parents. Bill Nighy takes on the role of the boy's estranged grandfather, while Maisie Williams plays Kait, a musician joining the boys' journey.

Lowery attended the film's premiere in Ireland in February 2026. He acknowledged that while some plot points and characters differ slightly from the book, the film's essence remains intact. He praised the film for beautifully encapsulating his original intentions in a different medium, describing it as a brilliant and beautiful cinematic achievement.
