The Austin Film Society is set to open its third screening room, the John H. McCall Theater, at AFS Cinema on October 24. This new venue will launch with a weekend-long celebration, including the premiere of James Gray's crime thriller "Paper Tiger." This event will also feature a Q&A with Gray and AFS founder Richard Linklater.
Additional screenings during the opening weekend will include restored 4K versions of "The Color of Money," "Marie Antoinette," and the documentary "Unzipped." The McCall Theater, named in honor of a significant donor, is equipped with 169 seats and advanced 4K digital laser projection with 7.1 surround sound. Its addition is expected to greatly expand AFS's programming capabilities.
AFS, established in 1985 by Richard Linklater, has a history of supporting film and filmmakers. The organization previously received a donation from the McCall family to reopen the Marchesa Theater as AFS Cinema. The expansion with the McCall Theater underscores AFS's ongoing commitment to fostering a community around cinema in Austin.
