Apple Original Films has acquired the rights to a highly anticipated untitled biopic about Lance Armstrong, with Austin Butler set to star as the controversial cyclist. Edward Berger will direct the project, with Zach Baylin, known for "King Richard," writing the screenplay.
The film promises to delve into the entirety of Armstrong's life, from his courageous battle with cancer and subsequent seven consecutive Tour de France victories to his eventual admission of doping. This marks the first time Armstrong has officially granted approval for his life story to be told, following extensive discussions with producer Scott Stuber.
Apple Studios will produce the feature, with Stuber and Nick Nesbitt serving as producers. The project is expected to combine elements of sports drama and in-depth character study, akin to films like "Raging Bull" and "The Wolf of Wall Street." Austin Butler's casting continues his trend of working with acclaimed directors. Berger is currently directing "The Riders," while Baylin recently co-created the Netflix series "Black Rabbit."
