The passing of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has prompted a global outpouring of grief, with fans in Odisha joining millions worldwide to mourn her. Throughout her illustrious career, Bhosle maintained a notable connection with the Odia music industry, enhancing its credibility and national visibility.
Her foray into Odia cinema began with the 1968 film 'Arundhati,' where she sang 'Rasia Re.' Notably, 'Arundhati' featured all three Mangeshkar sisters—Lata, Asha, and Usha—singing songs, although Asha's contribution was later removed from the film and its record. Her last Odia film song was in 1992 for the movie 'Maa,' featuring the track 'To Na re Pindhili Sadhi.'
Bhosle's influence extended beyond film music. She recorded popular devotional and modern tracks and lent her voice to a Sambalpuri song. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she, along with her granddaughter Zanai and Shankar Mahadevan, re-recorded the state anthem 'Bande Utkala Janani' as a tribute to Odisha's frontline workers. Her final devotional Odia song, a Jagannath bhajan titled 'Manimaa,' was released in 2017.
