Art Basel HK: Elements Ignite Fair's Encounters
21 Mar
Summary
- Encounters section organized around water, fire, earth, and ether.
- Team led by Mami Kataoka aims to inject energy and dialogue.
- Programming extends beyond the venue to a digital installation.

The Encounters section at Art Basel Hong Kong is undergoing a significant curatorial transformation for its 2026 edition, guided by Mami Kataoka and a team of four experts. Their conceptual framework draws inspiration from Asian philosophy, organizing the 12 large-scale artworks around the elements of water, fire, earth, and ether. This approach seeks to overcome the challenges of exhibiting art in a marketplace setting.
Kataoka, director of the Mori Art Museum, alongside Isabella Tam from M+ Museum, Hirokazu Tokuyama, and independent curator Alia Swastika, aims to infuse the fair's most ambitious art segment with renewed energy and dialogue. This year's programming also features a site-specific digital installation by Christine Sun Kim at Hong Kong's Pacific Place, expanding the artistic experience beyond the convention center.
