Arlene Smith, a foundational voice of the R&B girl group The Chantels, died Wednesday at the age of 84. Smith, who penned and fronted the group's enduring 1957 hit "Maybe," had been experiencing health issues and passed away at a New York City rehabilitation center.
Born in 1941, Smith's musical journey began early, including a performance at Carnegie Hall at age 12. She joined The Chantels in 1957, and their single "Maybe" became a significant success, reaching No. 15 on the pop charts and No. 2 on the R&B charts. This breakthrough solidified The Chantels as pioneers for female R&B vocalists.
Beyond "Maybe," the group charted with other hits like "Every Night (I Pray)" and "I Love You So." After pursuing a solo career, Smith later led a different iteration of The Chantels in the 1970s. Upon retiring from music, she dedicated her time to teaching elementary school in the Bronx. The Chantels were honored with induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
