- Barer's heritage aligns with character's described background.

Actress Ariela Barer has been cast in A24's "Deep Cuts," a film directed by Sean Durkin. Barer, recognized for her roles in "How to Blow Up a Pipeline" and "The Last of Us," takes over a part previously intended for Odessa A'Zion.
The original casting of A'Zion generated controversy as the character in Holly Brickley's novel is described as being of Mexican and Jewish descent, a background A'Zion did not share and admitted not knowing before accepting the role.
Barer, who is herself Mexican American and Jewish, now steps into this significant role. The film, adapted from Brickley's debut novel, centers on two music-loving individuals in their twenties.
Set during the 2000s, "Deep Cuts" delves into their experiences with ambition, finding a sense of belonging, and navigating adulthood over a pivotal decade. The narrative moves from Brooklyn's bar scene to San Francisco's dance floors.
Blake Mills, a Grammy-nominated musician, is composing the original music for the film. The project is produced by a team including Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, and A24.
