Summary
- Candalepas Associates shortlisted for two distinct projects.
- Projects range from a luxury Sydney hotel to a community sanctuary.
- Five Australian projects made the international awards shortlist.

Angelo Candalepas, principal of Candalepas Associates, has been recognized with a rare double shortlist for the Royal Institute of British Architects International awards. His firm's work on two distinct projects, the Porter House hotel in Sydney and the Church of the Living God in Hurstville, exemplifies his core architectural philosophy: a building's impact on the human spirit is paramount.
The Porter House hotel in Sydney uniquely blends heritage with modernity, featuring a luxury apartment feel within its 10-storey structure. Excavated relics from the site are now displayed, connecting guests to the city's past. In contrast, the Church of the Living God in Hurstville serves as a sanctuary for a diverse Pentecostal community and women escaping domestic violence, designed to feel protective yet welcoming.
Across Australia, five projects were shortlisted for these prestigious international awards. Other notable Australian entries include fjcstudio's Darlington public school in Sydney, which focuses on a 'connecting with country' framework and earned prior global recognition. Gold Creek house in Brisbane, a collaboration between Glenn Murcutt and Brian Steendijk, and Wardle's Burnt Earth Beach House in Anglesea, Victoria, also secured spots in the competitive residential category.
The winners of the Royal Institute of British Architects International awards for excellence are scheduled to be announced on June 11, 2026, following a global jury's review of the 52 shortlisted projects.
