Archbishop Sheen, a pioneering religious broadcaster known as the "first televangelist," gained prominence in the 1950s with his television show "Life is Worth Living." His message transcended specific religious dogma, reaching millions of American households.
Originally planned for Peoria, the main beatification ceremony will now take place in St. Louis, Missouri, due to the large expected attendance. Smaller events will be held in Sheen's hometown. Pope Leo XIV, also an Illinois native, approved the beatification earlier this year.
The journey to beatification faced delays, including a postponed ceremony in 2019 due to legal investigations in New York. However, church officials later determined that Sheen's record warranted no further delay, and plans for the ceremony resumed.
Sheen, who passed away in 1979, was initially buried in New York but was moved to Peoria in 2019. His tomb has become a pilgrimage site, with visitors leaving items that are considered relics.
