Apple TV has secured the rights to Brandon Sanderson's sprawling Cosmere literary universe in a deal described as unprecedented. This acquisition signals a major move by the streaming giant into the high-fantasy genre. The initial focus for adaptations will be the Mistborn series, slated for feature films, and The Stormlight Archive, which is being developed as a television series.
Producers are already attached to The Stormlight Archive television project, with Blue Marble attached to executive produce. This landmark agreement grants Sanderson, a prolific and beloved author with over 50 million copies sold globally, an exceptional degree of creative control over the screen translations. He will serve as the universe's architect, writing, producing, and consulting, with final approval rights.
The Cosmere universe, while set across various worlds, revolves around a cosmic event where a being named Adolnasium was killed, its power fragmenting into 16 shards. These shards spread magic across numerous worlds. The Mistborn trilogy centers on a rebellion against a tyrannical empire using metal-based magic, while The Stormlight Archive is set in a world affected by magical storms and features knights and creatures called Voidbringers.
