Apple Buys Severance: In-House Studio Takes Control
11 Feb
Summary
- Apple acquired Severance IP and rights for under $70 million.
- Apple Studios now produces the drama, previously handled by Fifth Season.
- Season 3 filming targeted for summer, with all scripts to be finalized.

Apple has acquired the intellectual property and all rights to its flagship drama series Severance from Fifth Season for under $70 million, with the deal finalized late last year. Apple Studios will now produce the Emmy-winning series, shifting from its original "outie" studio producer, Fifth Season, which will remain an executive producer. This move follows a similar pattern seen with the drama Silo.
Severance, a high-concept drama known for its complex production, faced significant budget overages and delays during its second season due to COVID protocols, Hollywood strikes, and script changes. Fifth Season shouldered these costs, leading Apple to acquire the series to better manage its financial burden and creative direction.
Season 3 of Severance is tentatively targeted to begin filming in the summer, with a crucial emphasis on having all scripts finalized beforehand to prevent costly production issues. This strategic shift aims to streamline production and maintain the show's momentum, with plans for at least four seasons.
Fifth Season reportedly incurred financial losses on the first two seasons, making the acquisition a financially advantageous exit. Apple's acquisition aims to enhance the franchise's value, potentially through future spin-offs or international versions, while solidifying Severance's position as a cornerstone of Apple Studios' slate.
