Anupam Kher: Why I Chose Rent Over Owning a Home

Anupam Kher, who famously arrived in Mumbai with only Rs 37, has spoken about his conscious decision to forgo homeownership for a period, opting instead for a rented residence. This choice stemmed from a desire for simplicity rather than financial necessity, as his life and career evolved. He and his wife, Kirron Kher, initially searched for a home, but after she became a Member of Parliament and relocated to Chandigarh, Kher found living in simpler, rented accommodations more grounded.

Kher's philosophy extends beyond monetary pursuits; he prioritizes becoming the best actor he can be. While he embraced simplicity for himself, he ensured his mother's long-held dream of a Shimla home was fulfilled, even purchasing a more substantial property than she had envisioned. He noted that his mother continues to prefer a simpler lifestyle and uses the house mainly during summer months.

The actor reflected on how success can fuel an unending chase for more wealth. He considers failure his most significant instructor, fostering personal growth, reinvention, and a reminder of life's vitality. Kher advocates for overcoming self-pity and finding joy in living, a skill he believes many have forgotten. His former Mumbai apartment was later purchased by Alia Bhatt in 2015 for approximately Rs 8.99 crore.
