An antique plaster cast of a pig's head, used in an 18th-century pub game, was recently sold at auction in Scunthorpe for £530. This historical game, believed to date back to the 1700s, was a fixture at the White Horse Inn, later known as the Jenny Wren, in Susworth.
Players would attempt to knock a penny off the pig's nose using a wooden handle suspended by a cord. Auctioneers confirmed the pig's head was purchased by a local man, signifying its return 'back home'.
The item was among several pieces auctioned following the pub's closure in December 2022. The pub's management cited increasing utility costs as the reason for its shutdown. The historical pig's head had generated significant interest due to its long-standing presence in the pub, reportedly hanging on the wall since its opening in 1719.
