"A Voice Spoke to Me": Anthony Hopkins' Gripping Alcoholism Recovery Story

In a recent interview, legendary actor Anthony Hopkins, 87, has shared the gripping story of the moment he realized he was an alcoholic. According to Hopkins, it was 11 o'clock precisely on an unspecified date when he was "drunk and driving [his] car here in California in a blackout, no clue where [he] was going." It was then that he "realized that [he] could have killed somebody -- or [himself], which [he] didn't care about."

Seeking help, Hopkins turned to an ex-agent at a party in Beverly Hills, saying, "I need help." At that moment, Hopkins recounts a profound experience: "Some deep, powerful thought or voice spoke to me from inside and said: 'It's all over. Now you can start living. And it has all been for a purpose, so don't forget one moment of it.'" This voice, which Hopkins described as "vocal, male, reasonable, like a radio voice," completely removed his desire to drink.

Reflecting on his struggles with alcohol, Hopkins shared that he drank to "nullify that discomfort or whatever it was in [him], because it made [him] feel big." However, the voice that spoke to him that fateful night has kept him sober for the past 49 years, a milestone he celebrated last December.
