The film, directed by Howard Deutch, follows the story of Jack Ritchie (Elgort), a down-on-his-luck writer who moonlights as a community college instructor.
Jack's fortunes take an unexpected turn when 93-year-old Lucy Boomer (MacLaine), a former secretary to four U.S. Presidents, agrees to an interview for his book. In exchange for her revealing journals, Jack helps Lucy escape her nursing home in Santa Fe and drive her home to North Dakota. Along the way, they pick up a free-spirited hitchhiker named Anna, who disrupts their uneasy companionship.
However, their road trip takes an unexpected turn when a local detective sets out to track them down. Produced by a team that includes Dan Grodnik, Alan Mintz, Mike Marcus, and Michael Benaroya, "Lucy Boomer" promises to be a heartwarming and comedic exploration of an unlikely friendship. Principal photography is slated to begin in February 2023 in New Mexico.
