Broadway Set Designer Anna Louizos Dies at 69

Acclaimed scenic designer Anna Louizos, celebrated for her imaginative stage sets, has died at the age of 69. Louizos passed away in New York from complications related to multiple myeloma, a condition that arose after a horseback riding accident last year. Her nearly 25-year career on Broadway was marked by groundbreaking designs that captivated audiences.

Louizos first gained prominence with her innovative set for the breakout hit "Avenue Q," which earned a Tony for Best Musical. Her subsequent Tony nominations recognized her work on "High Fidelity," the vibrant "In the Heights," and the period drama "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." Lin-Manuel Miranda lauded her ability to create sets that felt like authentic "homes" for audiences.

Born in Marysville, California, Louizos pursued scenic design in New York, earning an MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She also served as art director for the 1993 Tony Awards telecast, receiving an Emmy nomination. Her extensive portfolio included designs for "School of Rock," "Cinderella," and even television's "Sex and the City."

Beyond her design work, Louizos founded the Broadway Design Exchange in 2011, fostering a community for theater artists and enthusiasts. She is remembered by her wife, Robyn Goodman, and colleagues for her unique ability to create delightful and surprising theatrical experiences, often finding unconventional ways to bring scenery to life onstage.
