Animation Goes Green: New Eco-Certification Launched
17 Jul
Summary
- ANiMPACT certification program assesses animation's environmental impact.
- Electricity for computers is animation's largest environmental cost.
- Certification aims to unlock financial incentives for studios.

The European animation industry is now set to receive its own environmental certification, a system named ANiMPACT. Launched as a pilot program, this initiative allows animation studios to demonstrate their commitment to environmentally responsible production. The program is a collaboration between CineRegio, Ecoprod, and Green Film, bringing together expertise in film funding, sustainable filmmaking, and live-action certification.
The ANiMPACT system addresses a gap in environmental assessment for animation, which, despite its digital nature, carries a significant ecological cost. Unlike live-action productions where travel and location shoots are major emission sources, animation's primary impact stems from electricity consumption for computers and rendering. This electricity use accounts for roughly half of a production's environmental footprint.
Organizers aim for ANiMPACT to provide a unified European standard, learning from the fragmented development of live-action certifications. The program evaluates seven key areas, including office energy use, digital workflow, travel, and merchandise. Studios can be assessed on a project or company basis, with weighted standards to reflect their impact. The pilot phase runs until May 2027, with a finalized version anticipated shortly after.
