A television adaptation of the popular "Animorphs" book series is currently in early development for Disney+. The project is set to be written and executive produced by Bayan Wolcott. Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media are also executive producing, leveraging their existing TV overall deal with Disney.
The series will follow a group of teenagers who uncover a secret alien invasion and gain the extraordinary ability to morph into any animal they touch. This power is bestowed upon them by a dying alien race fighting a parasitic species known as Yeerks, who are secretly taking over Earth. The teenagers must use their morphing abilities to launch a covert resistance.
Scholastic, the publisher of the original "Animorphs" series, is also involved, with Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman executive producing. The book series, created by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant, comprised 54 main books and sold over 35 million copies worldwide.
This will be the second "Animorphs" television adaptation, following a live-action series that aired on Nickelodeon between 1998 and 2000. Proximity Media is also working on a pilot for a "The X-Files" reboot under their Disney deal. The "Animorphs" adaptation joins other young adult book-to-series projects at Disney+, such as "Percy Jackson" and "Eragon."
